Holy Grove is pushing heavy rock into exciting new realms on II, their second full-length record, and first for Ripple Music. Recording again with “engine-ear” Billy Anderson (Sleep, Swans), the members of Holy Grove continue to blur the lines between classic heavy metal, doom and prog, unafraid to take long, strange trips, peel off hot-shit guitar solos, or scream as if their lives depend on it.

II bridges the gap between Holy Grove’s gritty heavy blues past and their darker cosmic present. First single “Solaris” summons the best of Holy Grove—tight riffs, interludes, and a groove that has already proven to induce fist-raising and headbanging. Opener “Blade Born” is a bone-crusher of a rock ’n’ roll song (if the chorus doesn’t hook itself into your fleshy pleasure centers, that smoking guitar solo will), and the cowbell kicker on “Aurora” takes you down to a beer-bust in Hades. Once you get to the meticulously constructed “Valley of the Mystics” (a fantastical nod to The Dark Crystal), the unexpected turns will make you feel as if you’re floating one second, and being violently hurled through space the next. The aptly titled “Cosmos” is a space rock masterpiece that features ghostly vocals from Vidal and Yob’s Mike Scheidt. Listen closely and you can hear the song disintegrating as it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere.

This is the work of true believers in the power of rock ’n’ roll. The fact we’re talking about Holy Grove in 2018 is a testament to that spirit (they came together six years ago as strangers, and have since grown as humans and musicians into a tight-knit family). It took four years to finally release their self-titled debut, which was met with local and national acclaim in the spring of spring 2016. The band went on to storm stages in the United States and Europe in a mass of swinging hair and raw power (the band has shared the stage with the likes of Yob, Royal Thunder, and Witch Mountain).

Even while searching for a new drummer in late-2016 the band still played the massive Psycho Las Vegas festival. And they never stopped working. Guitarist Trent Jacobs and bassist Gregg Emley continued to write and massage the songs that would become II, and vocalist Andrea Vidal started writing her most personal and mystical lyrics to date. By June of 2017 powerhouse drummer Eben Travis entered the fray, joining Emley to make one of the most formidable rhythms sections in heavy rock. That foundation allows Jacobs to roam freely on guitar. As for Vidal, she delivers her most searing vocal performance to date, one that’s equally indebted to Ann Wilson as it is Tina Turner. Billy Anderson’s assured but gentle touch allows all the pieces to breathe and sweat like a bombastic Holy Grove live set.

II is a culmination of the trials of life. But mostly it’s the result of the love and dedication (and, perhaps, the killer record collections) of the four individuals involved. This is album number two, but it feels like this is only the beginning for Holy Grove. -Mark Lore

Blade Born 07:45
When the reign Is high as the sun Their rulers in time Will come undone Like a red burning flame Burning past the trees Under an open sky They still can’t see Twisted blackened flags that wave Remind us why we left the grave Blade Born You came forth from the fire With iron and with earth Supreme, assuring, solemn Your frost mysterious Stranger of impossible dreams Drawn by rumors Of what it seems Like a dancer of death True lovers in pain Til there’s nothing left But our hearts remain Twisted blackened flags that wave Remind us why we left the grave Blade Born You came forth from the fire With iron and with earth Supreme, assuring, solemn Your frost mysterious Hearts gripped by the outcome As we climb towards the mountain Wave them high Away from the mountain No pain, no scent, no life She lives, she moves, she rides Void of the light inside Our swords towards the fight The blood will roll alright Her spirit, take flight Blade Born Bye bye

Aurora 03:44
Thunder all night long Been moving in from the hills of Babylon I might’ve wandered just a bit too far Keepin a true phenomenon Aurora You got me Searching for your silhouette And smelling Like saffron That you laid on When you laid upon my bed Aurora You’re a beauty in disguise You’re a healer So protect me with your light Aurora You got me Waiting for the breeze Hiding the one First of the son From the three Rosie is the sky to me A lover for all eternity Oh lord don’t let me forget That the skies above are so infinite Ain’t no mystery to me Is she marred by misery? Aurora You’re a beauty in disguise Healer Hiding the one, First of the son From the three

Solaris 08:46
The storms are gathering In a world distorted Their sense of innocence Out of proportion Years have gone and Left us as our weakness Turns to ashes Worthless service for the one In the belly of the ocean You are the ghost inside my heart You were never here So far from home Pounding waves caress my bones Islands of memories So far from home Conceal my crying heart As I face your ghost Too scared to act afraid And be exposed Leave this phantom Justify the path that you have taken Worthless service for the one In the belly of the ocean You are the ghost inside my heart You were never here So far from home Pounding waves caress my bones Islands of memories So far from home It’s like a wound That I’m trapped inside Forest of souls Whose trees have died Release the flood Walk from the edge You’ll raise the tide The blood is dead Some will wait All their lives To find a reason To sacrifice I wrote the tale I know it well Fall away For a spell Sentient waters Adrift at sea Your world is drowning In front of me x2 I’m out of breath But yet I breathe I’m underwater Am I asleep? The waking deep That I must leave In the name of passion Issues from the past How foolish I have been The love I’ve built Is crashing all around me I don’t know where to begin Sentient water that has swallowed me The waves are all around The blood is coming from the water I will not fall to the ground

Cosmos 12:17
In my mind A nothingness No sands of time To reflect A rush of howling sound A brush with pain Nothingness Again A rounded moon And the crying wind Under pine And away he sits We’ve seen your fields Then we burn your shores And when the time is right You’ll lead them on Starlight the past From her heart Into their hands The aftermath Never going back Starlight the past From their heart Into her hands The aftermath Never going back Take the child The curtain falls on broken stars To the cosmos Beware the undertow Beyond the sea With my stretched wings A heavy sorrow Her spirit sings She holds the key Unearthed a map And I will follow the path And I recall the moon An undeniable pull How intimate and infinite her walk In constellations Will help me find My Safe Return again I dream of shooting stars I dream in clouds of smoke The universe it cries And you and I are both awoke The blaze it burns for days And maybe I’m amazed That I’m alive How much longer will it last? While my heart is stuck in the past? Am I whole now? Am I’m running? Gotta keep on moving- I’m running away Run, run Away How much longer will it last? While my heart is stuck in the past Will my feet take me there? I keep moving to the wind
